Don’t let the attacker get too close to you
In this article, we’ll guide you on how to defend yourself against the push and shove attack. This attack is very common in a street fight. Your opponent could use it before the fight begins to heave you off your feet. To prevent him from doing so, read this article to the end.
The first thing you should do is to keep your hands up. This would enable you to make sure your opponent doesn’t get too close to you. That, in turn, would keep you out of their range, preventing him from landing a controlled punch at you.
With your raised hands, you could also shove the attacker away the moment he tries to push you backward. You could use the space between his hands to launch a palm strike on his chin. Or, if that isn’t possible, you could throw a throat strike.
Even if you do get caught off guard, your first instinct should be to bring your hands up as quickly as you can. The reason we’re saying that is because “hands up” is a passive stance. It lets the attacker know that you don’t want to accept his invitation to fight.
However, if the attacker seems eager to press matters ahead, you could quickly turn the passive stance into an aggressive one. You can open up his hands and come in with a solid headbutt. This will prevent him from coming at you.

There’s another important thing you need to keep in mind.
Avoid walking backwards in a straight line when you get pushed and shoved. Start angling towards the sides to make it difficult for the attacker to hit you.
Moving from side to side will also help you disrupt the attacker’s momentum, preventing him from following up the push and shove attack with something more serious.
