Important cues during a robbery
One thing that is often not mentioned during self-defense classes is the importance of listening to your attacker. So, why should you pay attention and listen to your attacker?
While it might not seem like the obvious thing to do, it is without a doubt an important thing to remember in self-defense.
Don’t forget: your attacker is the one who holds the power. Therefore, you want to try and calm him down as much as possible to avoid the situation from escalating.
You don’t know the level of violence he is willing to go to and you don’t know if he has any other tricks up his sleeve. That’s why it’s important to listen to your attacker and try to keep him calm as much as possible.
Words are important during an attack; pay attention to them
Perhaps your attacker is communicating something to you that can be crucial. Maybe it’s personal information that shows he’s been stalking you. Or maybe it’s what he plans to do if you don’t cooperate.
Whatever it is, it’s important that you listen carefully to what your attacker is saying.

Additionally, you want to also communicate back with him. This will show that you’ve been listening, and you are interested in what they are saying.
It proves to the attacker that you are taking him seriously which can ultimately put him at ease. Paying attention to what he is saying can also give you hints about when to strike back.
