Self Defense Tips when Living in a Big City
In busy cities where there is a lot of movements, street beggars are very common. While some are harmless, others can be threatening and the situation can become dangerous. This is why we’ll share self-defense tips for dealing with a beggar.
Firstly, when dealing with street panhandlers, you need to be extra vigilant. Being alert and aware of your surroundings is key when it comes to self-defense. This is even more the case when it comes to street beggars.
Don’t forget, they are in desperate situations. And in some cases, they can even be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. You never know who you’re dealing with and how they will react.
What to do when you Encounter a Street Beggar
The best thing to do when you spot one is to mind your business and keep distance. If you see one in the street while you’re in your car stopped at a red light, make sure your doors are locked and windows rolled up.
Some will tend to come near your car to ask for money and what not, you want to signal to them that you’re not interested and that you don’t have anything on you.
In most cases they will move on and go to the next car to try their luck there. However, there are some panhandlers who could turn aggressive which is why you want to ensure that your doors are always locked and windows closed to avoid confrontation.
In the event that you’re unable to pull up your window, you can give money (if you have any), but always be ready for anything against a panhandler.
This is where being alert and aware of your surroundings plays a crucial role.
If the street beggar comes closer and asks for money in an aggressive manner, you need to place your body in an angle and lift your hands up to protect yourself from possible incoming strikes.
Having your hands up in a passive stance will create a shield between you and the street beggar.
If you’re able to spot a street beggar from far, you can already react and prepare yourself to avoid any drastic situations.

Keep in mind that most panhandlers are not a threat to your safety. But then again, it really depends on the situation, the place and the time of the day.
