Self-Defense Tips Against a 6’4″ Attacker

What to do when facing a much taller attacker

After years of teaching self-defense, we get questions that keep coming back. One of them is: How do you defend yourself against a taller opponent? Keep reading, to discover self-defense tips against a 6’4″ attacker.

The most common attack you’re bound to come across is when someone taller comes at you quickly and grabs you by the shirt and starts punching you repeatedly.

This is often what we see in street fights. Another fight scenario that often happens is when the attacker appears out of nowhere and starts throwing random punches with a lot of force behind each hit.

Both fight scenarios happen rather quickly and unexpected and you barely have time to react. That’s why we believe in the importance of always being prepared.

Here’s a complete tutorial on how to protect yourself from a much taller and bigger opponent.

Always be aware of your surroundings and the people around you

By staying alert and aware, you can be prepared for these unexpected scenarios and react quickly. Expect the unexpected.

For instance, you don’t know if your attacker has a backup or if he’s carrying any weapons. By assuming the worst, you’re mentally preparing yourself for the worst-case scenario.

When it comes to self-defense tips against a larger attacker, you need to think fast and efficiently.

The one arm lapel is a good way to defend yourself, however, you need to remember that since your attacker is bigger, he already has a significant advantage when it comes to strength.

Therefore, when your attacker grabs you by your shirt, stay alert. There’s a good chance that he might strike you with his arm when you least expect it. With that in mind, it’s best to trap his arm to be on the safe side.

By blocking his arm that’s attempting to grab you, try and find an opportunity where you can block any upcoming strikes that he might try to do with his other hand.

Being aware of your surroundings and all of your attacker’s movements is key here.

Strength plays a huge role in a street fight

It’s a crucial element and with your opponent being much larger and bigger, he will outweigh you every time if you try to out-muscle him. Therefore, your main goal should be to trap his arm and hands.

A great way to block your opponent from striking you is by bringing his arm down and using all your force to keep him there. By blocking him from striking you, you will have the upper hand and a better chance of escaping.

When it comes to self-defense, size does matter.

Speed and range are other important factors as well that play a crucial role in personal protection.

Chances are, your attacker will often be larger than you. But, just because you’re smaller doesn’t mean that it’s a lost cause. With the proper self-defense techniques, you can easily have the upper hand and escape the situation.

It’s all about your tactics and being smart about it. With the right self-defense tips and staying alert, you just might be able to fight your opponent and successfully defend yourself against your attacker.
