Proper Fighting Distance: A Key to Self Defense

A Key Principle of Self Defense

Can you guess a significant element to walking away from street fights in one piece? Hint: It is often neglected. If you answered: “The need to maintain proper fighting distance is key for self defense”, you are correct!

Distance is one of the many things you must be aware of when in the heat of conflict. Exactly where your opponent is in relation to yourself.

You need to know this so you have an idea what your opponent is capable of doing to you, and what you’re able to do to your opponent.

Here’s another question…

What if your opponent has a knife on him? Do you want to be so far away that you’re unable to stop him from reaching into his pocket?

Usually, you should use verbal defense tactics if your opponent has a deadly weapon, but let’s assume that is impossible in this case.

You might be keeping what you believe to be a good distance from your opponent. But then he pulls out a knife, or takes out a weapon. If this happens, you’ll be in for more than you bargained for.

In order to control a fight, you must also control the distance. If your opponent controls the distance then it is his fight to win. You need to stay sharp and remain aware of your position at all times. This is a key element to having a high fighting I.Q.

Discover the Proper Fighting Distance

Watch the following video in which we demonstrate exactly why maintaining proper distance is crucial.

As you can see, the proper fighting distance might look closer than you initially believed. You have to keep in mind how much range your punches have. If your range is X then your position should be less than X.

This positioning could be considered more aggressive because you’re right in your opponent’s comfort zone. In this case, aggressiveness is closely tied to control, which is what you want. When you’re in a fight, it has to be on your terms.
