In this article, we’ll dive into how to use your environment in self defense. Unfortunately, not many instructors talk about this topic, but truth is your environment plays a huge role in self defense.
Imagine the following scenario. You’re out in public, and a person with a knife wants to hurt you. Problem is, you’re like the majority of people who go out in public unarmed.
This could be because of the laws of the area you live in, or a personal choice. Either way, you’re going to want to know how to use your environment in self defense to make it out alive.
This often means using whatever you can find around you as a tool to defend yourself.
These tools will, at the very least, buy you enough time to make an escape or draw out an encounter long enough for help to arrive.
The following video displays a tactic that makes use of a parked car in order to protect yourself from your attacker.
Using a Car as a Static Improvised Weapon
Parked cars are a simple resource you can use to preserve your life, as you can see from the video.
This example is just one of many things you should keep in mind when you are on the street and you run into someone who wants to harm you.
You need to be aware of your surroundings at all times, and quickly look around to assess what can and cannot be used as a weapon. This could be an exercise you engage in regularly whenever you are outside.
You won’t always find yourself in an ideal situation where obvious blunt or sharp objects are available on the street to use as an improvised weapon. Because of this you should train yourself to think outside of the box.
