Defense against a Rear Naked Choke

Self Defense Tips on How to Escape a Rear Naked Chokehold

There are many attack scenarios that can put you in a difficult situation. The chokehold is one of them. Therefore, it’s crucial to know how to defend yourself against one. Knowing how to prevent and defend yourself against a rear naked choke is fundamental in self-defense.

Ideally, you want to prevent being in that position in the first place. Why? Because getting out of a choke-hold position is extremely difficult to get out of. The best way to avoid being locked in a rear naked choke hold is to be aware at all times.

That’s why at Code Red Defense, we can’t stress enough on the importance of awareness and being alert and aware of your surroundings. This is a key element in self-defense.

Awareness: A Key Element of Self Defense

No matter where you are or what time it is, you always need to be alert.

If you feel someone behind you, you need to be aware of their intentions. Don’t ever let anyone get too close to you from behind. This will give them the opportunity to put you in a rear naked choke and it can be extremely difficult to get away.

The second you feel someone’s arm coming around your neck from behind, you need to act fast. Try to step away to make it harder for your attacker to grab you.

If he does attempt to grab you and you can’t get away, tuck in your chin and grab your attacker’s arms by pulling him down and putting your weight behind it. This will release the chocking attempt and you’ll have a better chance of defending yourself.

If you’ve managed to prevent the chokehold from happening, you need to act fast. Strike your attacker as quickly as you can and make sure you keep striking until you’ve managed to incapacitate your attacker long enough for you to get away.

You then want to strike as fast as possible with powerful hits to the groin area of your attacker.

Make sure to practice these movements with your training partner as it can help you further develop your self defense skills.
